Critical thinking is the highest level of human thought.

It is the process or method of thinking that questions assumptions. It is a way of deciding whether a claim is true, false, or sometimes true and sometimes false, or partly true and partly false.

The origins of critical thinking can be traced in Western thought to the Socratic method of Ancient Greece and in the East, to the Buddhist kalama sutta and Abhidharma.

Critical thinking is an important component of most professions.

Critical thinking has been described as “reasonable reflective thinking focused on deciding what to believe or do.” It has also been described as "thinking about thinking."

Why is Critical Thinking Important?

Critical Thinking allows us to analyze and evaluate questions, information, inferences, concepts, assumptions, implications, points of view, beliefs, and situations in the process, decreasing the risk of acting on a false premise and allowing successful goal setting and the restructuring of aims.

The loss of this faculty can lead decision makers to make poor decisions which can be fatal to a corporation in today’s intensely competitive business world. Such a loss can occur for a variety of reasons: injury, intoxication, denial, or narrow-mindedness.

Chinese Critical Thinking Battery To foresee, predict and ultimately prevent such collapses of logical capacity, PROWAY has created the Chinese Critical Thinking Battery to assess the five most important higher mental abilities:

An essential and measurable element of the mental process, inference is the ability to make logical choices given insufficient information.

Recognition of Assumptions
Measures how well one can make accurate conclusions based on rational assumptions and the ability to accurately guess another person’s mindset using logic and intuition.

Deduction
The deduction portion measures how well formal logic is understood. This relates to the ability to eliminate subjective feelings and base decisions on syllogistic logic, the Aristotelian system which has been the predominant logic in Europe for the last 2000 years.

Interpretation
Assuming all information provided is accurate, interpretation measures how well the a person recognizes absolute truths.

Evaluation of arguments
Relevant arguments must be important and related to the topic at hand. When debating an important topic, we must be able to differentiate between relevant and irrelevant arguments.

Why is CCTB effective and useful?
The foundation of critical thinking is intelligence Traditional Intelligence Quotient [IQ] tests measured verbal and non-verbal abilities, including spatial visualization, verbal comprehension and numerical facility.

PROWAY’S CCTB offers a broader view of critical thinking ability than traditional IQ tests as IQ tests measure abilities which are not necessarily work-related in today’s culture. The standard IQ tests have been in use for many years, and have lost some validity for prediction because of their availability and the potential for cheating.
